Guinness closing iconic brewery?
Guinness owners Diageo are looking at the possibility of closing the St. Jame’s Gate brewery in Dublin and moving to a new location north of the city. Guinness has been brewed at St. James’s Gate since 1759, and Diageo could earn up to 3 Billion Euro for the 56-acre piece of land located in the Dublin city centre. Currently, more than 500 million litres of Guinness is brewed on the site. Word is that Diageo is looking to build a new state-of-the-art brewery just north of the city, or on a 100-acre tract of land near the home of the Guinness family in County Kildare. But, the brewery would not sell off all of its land in the city centre, keeping the Guinness Storehouse, Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction. Last November, Dublin city councillors passed a motion stating that it was a “key objective” of the council to retain the brewery at St. James’s Gate. Two things to consider: One, Guinness holds a 9000-year lease on the land. Does this preclude the sale of the land as they don’t actually own it outright? And two, there were rumours last year that Diageo was considering selling the Guinness brand itself. Diageo itself laid that rumour to rest last summer.
