Major beer tax hike coming to Australia?
A proposal by a member of the Australian Government’s preventive health tax force could see a 300 percent tax increase on beer and wine down under.
The tax hike on beer would follow a similar hike on so-called alcopop drinks. Australian General Practice Network chief executive Kate Carnell, who proposed the 70 percent alcopop hike, said it was time all alcohol was taxed at the same rate to cut drinking and to improve the nation’s health.
The Australian Hockey Association warns that the hike would have a negative impact on ordinary Australians and increase inflation.
Beer drinkers around the world are already looking at rising prices due to the increased costs of ingrediants and transportation. A 300 percent tax increase would have an even bigger impact on beer costs for Australian drinkers.
